I closed a $500 client and immediately panicked. Here's why.

I want to tell you about the moment the deal actually happened, because it didn't feel like a win at first.
My plan going into that week was simple: do free work, get testimonials, figure out the rest later. I genuinely was not trying to close a paying client. I thought I needed a portfolio first.
What shifted everything was the playbook approach.
Before every call with a founder, I'd take their Reddit post history, find their Twitter by searching the app name, and build a full marketing playbook for their specific product using Claude. Not a generic "here's how Reddit marketing works" document. A specific one. Their subreddits. Their content angles. Their 90-day roadmap.
I wasn't pitching. I was showing them work I'd already done for their product, for free, before they'd agreed to anything.
Multiple founders said some version of the same thing: "Can you just handle this for me?"
I wasn't expecting that.
One of them asked directly what I'd charge. And I froze. Because I genuinely had no idea. I told him I'd get back to him. Then I went to Gemini and asked how to price this kind of service. It gave me a range. I thought about it. I told him $500 a month.
He said yes immediately.
And I panicked.
Not because something went wrong. Because something went right before I felt ready for it to. I'd never run a marketing campaign by myself before. I'd told him that explicitly. I was a web3 content writer crossing into a completely different lane. $500/month suddenly felt like a responsibility I wasn't sure I could meet.
The other thing that was in my head: this is way more work for less money than what I was making writing technical web3 pieces. That's just true. I knew it going in.
But the web3 work was drying up and more importantly it was getting boring. This felt like something I was actually building. The potential of it was different even if the immediate money was less.
That tension — between the excitement of something new and the uncertainty of whether you can actually deliver — is where I've been sitting for the last few weeks.
